A Perspective on the eXtension Foundation Impact Collaborative Experience

News, Newsroom

A Perspective on the eXtension Foundation Impact Collaborative Experience
by Marlin Bates, County Extension Director and Community Development Extension Agent
Kansas State Research and Extension – Douglas County

As a participant in the 2015 i-three issue corps and in the October, 2019 Impact Collaborative, I have developed a full-scale perspective of the value of this program development offering. I have appreciated the opportunity to participate in these events and I know that I have become a better Extension Professional because of that participation. Furthermore, I believe that I have become a better teammate because of this involvement. And although it was never an explicit component of the experience, I feel as though I have become a better leader through these experiences.

The eXtension Foundation introduced this novel approach to program development with some innovative components that remain integral in their design today – namely, the concept of key informants. However, what I appreciate the most is seeing the evolution of this effort through the years. Taking a step back and comparing my two experiences leads me to think that perhaps the most impressive quality of the eXtension Foundation was their willingness to put forth an imperfect offering, learn from it and continue to reiterate it to satisfy the needs of the audience – a lesson in risk-taking and development that all Extension Professionals would do well to emulate.

My most recent experience with the Impact Collaborative was simply brilliant. Having the opportunity to develop a program idea into an achievable project through numerous interactions with subject matter specialists – not programmatic subject matter specialists, but soft-skill subject matter specialists, teams of colleagues from across the country, identified coaches and my team from home was priceless. Our interactions not only gave us a more global perspective on our project – and our National mission -, it also provided us the opportunity to become a more cohesive team.

We didn’t participate in the Innovation Skill-Building Experience, but I was impressed by the inclusion of a curriculum that was aimed at getting teams started off on the right foot. Knowing that there are some teams that need that and others that simply need the space to put their heads down and get to work is a demonstration of the eXtension Foundation’s mastery of determining how best to help the teams that they intend to strengthen.

In short, my experiences with this program – and all of my experiences with eXtension, quite frankly – have led me to develop a great appreciation for the Foundation, the people who serve it, and the national network of colleagues that they have developed.

eXtension Announces Four New Climate/Extreme Weather Fellows

News, Newsroom

eXtension has selected four Cooperative Extension professionals to serve as Climate/Extreme Weather Fellows for 2020. Building on their existing work, the Fellows will lead teams of graduate and undergraduate students that will pull together resources across Extension related to Climate and Extreme Weather to create a landscape view of Extension programs and a system-wide repository. A request will go out shortly to the entire system for resources and information to add to the repository.

These individuals include:

  • Dr. Sarah Klain, Andrew J. Senti Assistant Professor of Ecosystem Services, Environment & Society Department, Utah State University
  • M. Jennison Kipp Searcy, Resource Economist, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences
  • Dr. Paul Lachapelle, Professor, Department of Political Science, Montana State University – Bozeman, Extension Community Development Specialist
  • Dr. Roslynn McCann, Associate Professor, Sustainable Communities Extension Specialist, Utah State University

Cooperative Extension is positioned to be the leading national resource with the most experience with on-the-ground implementation of conservation-based programming. The eXtension Climate Coalition, a member director-led effort, created a Fellowship as a short-term project dedicated to the compilation of program data across the Cooperative Extension System (CES).  The fellows will identify programming that is currently being implemented that aligns with Project Drawdown, other frameworks, and generally accepted conservation practices. Using eXtension support, the Fellows will develop a repository for this information that can help the CES develop a narrative around the work being performed across the U.S. The repository will be dynamic, accessible, and easy for specialists, program leaders, agents and educators to update and add to. Information will include programs, success factors, and adoption rates. It will be used to help:

  • Identify gaps in conservation/climate programming
  • Identify areas of greatest impact (or identify trends)
  • Help us identify measurements of acceleration
  • Focus CES interests on identified climate/extreme weather actions (solutions)
  • Help CES tell our story around climate/extreme weather programs (we will have an opportunity to seek funding and partners based on our current and future capacity)
  • Help identify where we are accelerating our impact the most
  • Empower CES Educators to align with these programs and their strengths
  • Allow for some longitudinal analysis
  • Foster some alignment in CES programming across the country

About the Fellows (Photos will be included)

Sarah Klain is the Andrew J. Senti Assistant Professor of Ecosystem Services in the Environment and Society department at Utah State University. She has a PhD in Resources, Environment and Sustainability from the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on the tangible and intangible ways in which people value ecosystems, particularly in the context of expanding renewable energy landscapes. Much of her past research focused on cultural ecosystem services, marine spatial planning and offshore wind farms. Currently, she is developing participatory research to integrate traditional ecological knowledge and western science in the context of climate-smart restoration in the Intermountain West. She teaches courses on environmental policy and ecological economics and serves as a handling editor for the journals People and Nature as well as Ecosystems and People. As an interdisciplinary sustainability scholar, her work contributes to the fields of ecological economics and conservation social science.

Jennison Kipp Searcy is an Ecological Economist and Sustainable Communities Extension Specialist with the University of Florida’s Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC) and Center for Land Use Efficiency (CLUE). In this position, she collaborates with multidisciplinary research teams and private- and public-sector partners throughout the state to facilitate the adoption of strategic, holistic, and integrated sustainability practices in Florida’s new master-planned community developments. She is also State Coordinator of the Sustainable FloridiansSM Program and a co-founder of Florida’s CIVIC (Community Voices, Informed Choices) Extension Program. Climate-related research and Extension programming have been unifying and enduring elements of Jennison’s professional career. She holds Master’s degrees in Agricultural & Environmental Economics and Environmental Pollution Control from Penn State University (where her research contributed to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Assessment of Climate Change Impacts) and served in Kenya as an Agroforestry Extension Volunteer with the U.S. Peace Corps (where she saw and experienced first-hand some of Earth’s most priceless and rapidly disappearing equatorial glaciers).

Paul Lachapelle is Professor in the Department of Political Science at Montana State University-Bozeman and serves as the Extension Community Development Specialist.  His teaching and research spans many disciplines and practices including community climate change resiliency, diversity and  inclusion, social impact investing and social justice topics.  His publications include the edited book, “Addressing Climate Change at the Community Level” (Routledge 2019) as well as journal articles on energy impacts in communities, democratic practice and local governance, and community visioning and leadership.  He earned a Ph.D. (Forestry) at the University of Montana’s College of Forestry and Conservation with a focus on natural resource policy and governance and serves as Editor of the Community Development Society Current Issues Book Series and member of the Board of Directors (and past-President) of the International Association for Community Development.

Dr. Roslynn Brain McCann is a Sustainable Communities Extension Specialist in the Department of Environment and Society, College of Natural Resources at Utah State University. She uses conservation theory, communication techniques, and social marketing tools to foster environmental behaviors in the areas of land (conservation, reducing, reusing and recycling), air (quality and climate change), food (consuming locally with a focus on CSA’s and farmer’s markets), water (quality, quantity, water resilient landscaping), and energy (efficiency and renewable energy). Roslynn also teaches communicating sustainability, helps facilitate the National Extension Sustainability Summit, runs a national database of sustainability-focused Extension programs, and is the coordinator for Utah Farm-Chef-Fork, the USU Permaculture Initiative, and Sustainable You! kids’ camps.

eXtension Migrates Learn Platform to Connect Extension

News, Newsroom

Over the past few years, the eXtension Foundation has been migrating its custom technology platforms to commercial tools. This has resulted in providing Cooperative Extension professionals with better technology solutions that are consistent with industry standards and provides greater flexibility, usability, and marketability. To date, the Articles publishing platform (articles.extension.org) and its companion content-authoring platform Create (create.extension.org) where former eXtension Communities of Practice created content for the public, was migrated to individual WordPress sites. A listing of those sites is available here.

Learn (learn.extension.org) was a tool used for listing and advertising digital events such as webinars across Cooperative Extension and to the public, and provided an archive of thousands of past events and recordings. As part of the New Technologies for Agricultural Extension (NTAE) Cooperative Agreement with USDA-NIFA, the eXtension Foundation has two primary objectives with Learn.

  1. Replace Learn with a commercially available product.
  2. Increase usage by 20% per year.

After consulting Learn users across the system, the eXtension Foundation wanted to ensure that a replacement platform met the needs of the system and provided all the features they have enjoyed using.

In March 2020, the eXtension Foundation launched Connect Extension (connect.extension.org). This third-party tool is powered by CrowdStack. One feature of Connect Extension is the ability to host a national calendar for Cooperative Extension to share events system-wide and for the public. The features and functions of the calendar tool in Connect Extension are nearly identical to the Learn platform at learn.extension.org, with some added features, making it a suitable replacement.

The Learn calendar is now part of Connect Extension. In the last 60 days, Cooperative Extension professionals have shared nearly 100 events to that calendar and several users are reporting significant results in participation at virtual events. Since inception on March 23rd, 2020, the new Learn calendar in Connect Extension has received nearly 250K page views. By comparison, the former Learn system at learn.extension.org received an average of 35K page views per month.

All content that was on the old Learn system at learn.extension.org prior to the March 2020 launch of Connect Extension, including all the tags, has been successfully migrated to Connect Extension. This includes nearly 4000 past events, many of which include recordings, that are now easily accessible to Cooperative Extension and the public.

All Cooperative Extension professionals can access the archive of past Learn events by visiting the Learn calendar on Connect Extension. To register your free Connect Extension account, please go to connect.extension.org and click Join. For a complete search of the archive, Connect Extension has an Advanced Search tool where individuals can search through the Learn calendar by any keyword including titles, tags, names, organizations, topic, to find all related content. To use the search feature, once you have logged into Connect Extension – please click on the magnifying glass in the navigation and click on Advanced Search. A direct link is available here.

With this migration complete, the old Learn platform at learn.extension.org will be deactivated on July 1st, 2020. The new Learn calendar can be found in Connect Extension at connect.extension.org.

The eXtension Foundation would like to thank the many Cooperative Extension professionals from past and present for their engagement with the Learn platform that has made it a unique collection of invaluable resources over the past decade. Their active support has continued to strengthen all the ways eXtension is able to serve Cooperative Extension. As a result of their support, engagement, and input – eXtension has been able to deliver an improved experience that helps expand the reach of critical expertise that Cooperative Extension brings to the public.

eXtension Partners with Farm Journal to Launch Monthly Story Lead Contest for Cooperative Extension

News, Newsroom

The eXtension Foundation, in partnership with Farm Journal, is pleased to bring this opportunity to Cooperative Extension.

Each month, we will offer a story lead contest in Connect Extension in the new Farm Journal Monthly Story Lead Contest group. Monthly winners, along with their Extension Directors and Administrators, will have the chance to work with Farm Journal to further develop their story and have it published in Farm Journal media.

Submissions for the contest are simply story leads, not full narratives. Farm Journal staff will review all submissions. Topic areas for story leads will change for each monthly contest.

Please join the Farm Journal Monthly Story Lead Contest group in Connect Extension to submit your story.  It’s fast and easy to do, and available to all Cooperative Extension professionals!

The topic area for the May 2020 contest is about the important work you’re doing to help farmers and rural communities create, conserve, or otherwise manage wildlife habitat. Click here to learn more about the format, and details about how to submit your story lead in Connect Extension!

About Farm Journal & Trust In Food

Farm Journal is the nation’s leading business information and media company serving the agricultural market. Started 144 years ago with the preeminent Farm Journal magazine, the company serves the row crop, livestock, produce and retail sectors. Trust In Food, a Farm Journal initiative, recognizes consumer confidence and trust in the value chain that grows, processes and markets America’s food depends on a sustainable and resilient agricultural production system.

Across the U.S., Trust In Food collaborates to bolster such a system – alongside universities, government agencies, conservation nonprofits, farmer associations, agribusinesses, food companies and food retailers. Trust In Food empowers farmers to catalyze economic, environmental and social improvements by explaining the why, how and what next of adopting on-farm conservation and sustainability practices.

The Joy of Search: Augmenting Intelligence by Teaching People How To Search

For All Cooperative Extension Professionals

Brought to you by our Technology in Extension Education Fellow, Dr. Rose Hayden-Smith, made possible through the New Technologies for Agricultural Extension (NTAE) Cooperative Agreement with USDA-NIFA.

Dr. Dan Russell has been teaching people how to augment their cognition by becoming more effective online researchers for the past decade.  In that time, he’s taught thousands of people (think students, librarians, professional researchers, and just plain folks) how to find out what they seek through Google (and many other online resources and tools).  This talk covers his experiences in learning how to teach these skills, and what he’s learned from direct interactions with his students and from various studies he’s run in the lab and with live search traffic.  He’ll discuss my MOOC (PowerSearchingWithGoogle.com), which has had over 4M students, his live classes, and various publications in paper, book, and video formats.  He can tell you which methods work best, why, and how it changes the way people think and answer difficult research questions.

Daniel Russell is Google’s Senior Research Scientist for Search Quality and User Happiness in Mountain View.  He earned his PhD in computer science, specializing in Artificial Intelligence.  These days he realizes that amplifying human intelligence is his real passion.  His day job is understanding how people search for information, and the ways they come to learn about the world through Google.  Dan’s current research is to understand how human intelligence and artificial intelligence can work together to better than either as a solo intelligence.  His 20% job is teaching the world to search more effectively.  His MOOC, PowerSearchingWithGoogle.com, is currently hosting over 3,000 learners / week in the course. In the past 3 years, 4 million students have attended his online search classes, augmenting their intelligence with AI.  His instructional YouTube videos have a cumulative runtime of over 350 years (24 hours/day; 7 days/week; 365 weeks/year).  His new book, The Joy of Search, tells intriguing stories of how to be an effective searcher by going from a curious question to a reliable answer, showing how to do online research with skill and accuracy.  (MIT Press)

eXtension RFP for Climate/Extreme Weather Fellowship

News, Newsroom

Cooperative Extension is positioned to be the leading national resource with the most experience with on-the-ground implementation of conservation-based programming. The eXtension Climate Coalition proposes creating a Fellowship effort as a short-term project dedicated to the compilation of program data across the Cooperative Extension System (CES).  The fellow(s), which could be one or two, will identify programming that is currently being implemented that aligns with Project Drawdown, other frameworks, and generally accepted conservation practices. Using eXtension support, the Fellow(s) will develop a repository for this information that can help the CES develop a narrative around the work being performed across the US.

  • Help us tell our story around climate/extreme weather action (we will have an opportunity to seek funding and partners based on our current and future capacity)
  • Help identify where we are accelerating our impact the most
  • Empower CES Educators to align with these actions and their strengths
  • Allow for some longitudinal analysis
  • Create some continuity in our programming across the country

Deliverables:

The Fellow(s) will lead:

  • Offering of at least one synchronous online professional development opportunity and use of the connect.eXtension.org social intranet platform.
  • Development and population of the Climate/Extreme Weather repository
  • Documenting current CES programs and practices in Climate/Extreme Weather and
  • Serve as the editor of Version 1 of the Real-Time Programmatic Inventory in Extension Education ePub to be published with eXtension no later than September 1, 2020. The eXtension ePub plus Connect.extension.org is a digital platform for aggregating content, tools and engagement available to all professionals in Cooperative Extension.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve in the role of editor of the ePub Version 1 and identify a review group and authors/contributors and follow the publication guidelines of eXtension. eXtension provides technical assistance and serves as publisher of the ePub.
  • Work with eXtension to establish a 6-8 person working group of professionals within and outside Cooperative Extension to serve as an advisory committee/editorial board. Schedule the working group to help gather and curate existing research, programs and best practices using eXtension technologies.
  • Develop a timeline with milestones for the project. A suggested time frame for this project is May through August. Aiming to have the final draft completed by September 1 for broader sharing and feedback.
  • Report on progress to eXtension regularly.
  • Offer at least 1 online professional development opportunity in the form of a webinar for Extension professionals.
  • Establish a group in Connect Extension and use it to keep in touch with the working group, the Advisory Committee and eFieldbook contributors.
  • eXtension provides technical assistance and serves as the publisher of the ePub, and data repository development and implementation. eXtension also provides technical support and marketing for professional development offerings.

Compensation:   Proposals should address how they will utilize $20,000 in the Climate/Extreme Weather Fellowship effort to support the overall work.  The $20K will be to accomplish the deliverables.  Examples of possibilities include two faculty/specialists applying together and receiving stipends of $10K each to share the effort (this could be faculty at one or two institutions); one faculty/specialist receiving a stipend of 5K to oversee and guide the work of a doctoral or master’s candidate who would receive a $15K stipend.

Reporting: The Fellow(s) will report to Megan Hirschman, eXtension Partnership and Development Specialist.  eXtension will provide $20,000 in total to support this work to the Fellow or the Fellow’s institution, depending on the best way to handle the funds for the institution.

Timeline:

Deadline for proposals: May 6, 2020

Start Date: May 20, 2020.

Project End Date: September 30, 2020.  This project is not static, and the philosophy will be to have 80-90% completion by September 1, and have an opportunity to introduce it to the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) at that time.
