What is the change you are designing to achieve?

Increased knowledge of a food system, increased vegetable consumption, and participating in garden practices.

How will you measure that change?

A formal survey among teachers, students and parents. In addition our evaluator key informant helped us to develop an informal survey through a ‘blog’ created by students.

What is the innovative component or strategy you will implement as a result of the design-a-thon?

A reworking of evaluation tools

How did the design-a-thon help you?

This experience allowed me to grow professionally through innovative conversations and ideas from new colleagues. I never would have expected this amount of learning in just three days

Summary:

The Kids, Compost, Crops and Consumption team aims to increase youth involvement in the food cycle. Students learn the basics of livestock and crop production, how to turn raw manure into compost, the value of compost as a fertilizer, importance of fertilizer for growing plants, how plants become food, how to make nutritious food choices and what influence we have in the food cycle.

 The target outcomes are students who are knowledge about agriculture and where their food comes from, increased vegetable consumption among students and students who know how to garden as an economical option for fresh food.
